About Todd O’Neill

In A Nutshell

I began my career as a video producer and director, then transitioned to multimedia production and then to online production. I now teach as a tenured full-time Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Interactive Media degree program in the Media Arts department in the College of Media and Entertainment at Middle Tennessee State University.

Projects that I have written or produced have won industry awards, have appeared in your local record store (The Artist FKA Prince “Interactive”), at newsstands across France (Hachette-Fillapaci “Explor’us” eCommerce CD-ROM), in your nearby training room, or on some humongous screen near you.

With all that background what does that make me?

  • Content Strategist
  • Digital Media Creator
  • Interaction Designer
  • Information Architect
  • Translator between Business and Technical people

I have owned small businesses, DoingMedia (online consulting and video), and C4 Workspace (coworking space) for as long as I have worked for “The Man.” The former means freedom to pursue my passions and regularly unscheduled chaos and the latter means stability and an often flattened forehead. Bring on the chaos.

When not working, blogging, or teaching, I enjoy time with my family, travel, riding my bike, singing and “playing” music (a guitar was my “mid-life crisis” purchase), woodworking, and general puttering around the house.

The Long Answer

I’ve worked in some aspect of electronic media communication for more than 25 years. I even have a professional mission: Empower people to leverage electronic media for their communication goals. I have taught at the college level nearly my entire career as a way of mentoring young professionals. In August 2012 I had my professional dream come true; I joined the faculty of the Electronic Media Communication Department at Middle Tennessee State University as Assistant Professor for New Media Communication.

I began my career as a video producer and director, and then transitioned to multimedia production and then to online content strategy, interaction design and e-commerce production.

Projects

I’ve written or produced projects that have won awards from the Texas Public Relations Association, Austin Area Multimedia Association, the Electronic Multimedia Association, the International Television Association, the Society for Technical Communication, and the Tellys. My work has appeared on the web (usaa.com), in your local record store (The Artist FKA Prince “Interactive”), at newsstands across France (Hachette-Filipacci “Explor’us”), and in corporate training and marketing rooms near you.

From 2007-2012 I owned DoingMedia, a communications agency specializing in content strategy and development.

It Takes a Village…

I’m big believer in community. I have been involved in professional associations for my entire career. I held multiple offices in the International Television Association (ITVA), renamed the Media Communications Association-International in 2000, concluding with President.

As part of my community passion I was Organizer and Licensee for TEDxSanAntonio from 2009 to 2012. I was involved in speaker selection for TEDxNashville 2014. TEDx events are local conferences operated under license from TED.

I remain active in local events and organizations including BarCamp, PodCamp and WordCamp, and various professional Meetups.

Going “All In”

In 2009 I was the catalyst for San Antonio’s first coworking space, C4 Workspace. Coworking spaces are a “third place”, an alternative to the coffee shop or working from home. They provide solos, start-ups, consultants and creatives with a professional environment where they can collaborate and connect with others. C4 Workspace was one of hundreds of coworking spaces across the U.S. and around the world. The space was open from June 2009 to September 2011.
